RESEARCH PROGRESS ON THE DENDROCLIMATOLOGICAL POTENTIAL FROM PAKISTAN: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Dr. Fayaz Asad
Abstract

Dendrochronology is one of the most important environmental recording techniques for a variety of natural environmental processes and a monitor for human-caused changes to the environment, such as pollution, contamination, and environmental changes. It is a new emerging field in this poorly known region of Pakistan. Therefore, the key objective of this review is to assess the dendrochronological potential of the major tree species under investigation at present in northern Pakistan. More published data in the field of dendroclimatology and dendrochronology was collected by searching on Google Scholar and Research Gate. The data we gathered came from the tree's scientific name, dendrochronology-related literature, and the name of the pioneer dendrochronologists. We were able to collect data on the ten species, such as Abies pindrow, Cedrus deodara, Juniperus excelsa, Juniperus semiglobosa, Juniperus seravchanica, Juniperus turkestanica, Pinus gerardiana, Picea smithiana, Pinus wallichiana, Pinus roxburghii, and Taxus baccata from research papers that were published up until December 2022. The most extensively researched species is Pinus wallichiana (20.51%), which is followed by Abies pindrow (16.67%), Picea smithiana (15.38%), and Cedrus deodara (14.1%). Taxus baccata was rarely chosen for dendrochronological research. The chronologies of Juniperus excelsa and Juniperus turkestanica were found to be the longest, while Cedrus deodara was the shortest. From this review, we concluded that the high mountain areas of the Karakoram Himalayas of Pakistan have a high potential for dendrochronological studies. We could reconstruct historical climate change events and also analyze the diverse impact of regional climatic changes on tree growth patterns in the regions. Such findings would ideally contribute to our adaptation plans and forest management process in the high mountains of Asia
