SCREENING OF SALT TOLERANT RICE GENOTYPES AT REPRODUCTIVE STAGE UNDER THE GREEN HOUSE CONDITION

Arshad Ali Kaleri
Abstract

Rice is an imperative cereal crop grown in Pakistan and it is second largest food crop consumed by a huge population. The world is facing the foremost challenges of abiotic stresses in agriculture among which salinity is one of the disastrous towards rice production. The current experiment was performed at Plant Physiology Division, Nuclear Institute of Agriculture (NIA), Tandojam during Kharif season 2017-18 under hydroponic (green house). However, medium height was found in Kharagnjia, RST-178, HH2 SAL-10-DT1-DT2, IR-83, DR-83, GML-538 and SHUA-92 (99.0, 97.67, 98.33, 96.67, 99.67, 94.00 and 99.33). Kharaganjia proved to be tolerant in both salt treatments (6 dS/m-1 and 8 dS/m-1). Among salt stress with 8 dS m-1 maximum relative decline were observed in FL-478 (39%), IR-83 (37%) and HH2 SAL-10-DT1-DT2 (34%) and considered as salt sensitive. The largest panicle length was observed in HH2 SAL-10-DT1-DT2 under normal and salt stresses (6 dS m-1 and 8 dS m-1) as 31cm, 27cm and 25 cm, followed by RST-178 (25.33 cm). Maximum number of spikelet’s panicle-1 were found in the genotypes IR-8, IR-83, Shua-92, Kangni-27, Basmati-515 (9.33 and 9.00). RST-177 (162.67; 172.33g) and HHZ-SAL10-DT1-DT1 (165.00; 175 g) proved to have maximum number grains and grain yield plant-1 at 8 dS m-1 NaCl stress.  RST-178, IR-72, HHZ SAL-10-DTI-DT1 and IR-83 (42.30, 42.76, 40.97 and 40.41) exhibited greater chlorophyll content. Hence, RST-177 and HHZ-SAL-10 DT1 DT1 proved to be salt tolerant genotypes. Mean performance depicted that GML-498 and Kharanganjia (91.00cm and 90.49cm) exhibited short stature height. More tillers plant-1 and panicle length exhibited in HHZ- SAL-10- DT1 DT1 (23.163;24.12) followed by Kharaganjia under 6 dS m-1 salinity stress. Kharagnajia showed greater number of spikelet’s panicle at 6 dS m-1 salt stress. The hybrids as KSK-133 x HHZ-10-SAL-DT1 DT1 (90.38cm), RST-177 x Kharagnjia, HHZ-10-SAL x GML-498, HHZ-10-SAL DT1 DT1 x Kharaganjia and FL-478 x Kharangania observed short stature height, more number of grains panicle-1, seed yield plant-1under 6 and 8 dS m-1 salt stress.
