Modeling Long Term Impacts of Tillage & Cropping System on Crop Productivity and Greenhouse Gases Fluxcs

Abstract


The world over, traditional tillage was marketed as a technique to improve soil qualities and reduce input costs for crop production, but its effects on soil qualities vary depending on the area, temperature, and time spent using it. In the dryland Pothowar region of Pakistan, degrading soil and rising input costs present hurdles to crop production. Using legumes in crop rotations to improved soil fertility and crop performance was one of the oldest agricultural management methods. To evaluate the cropping systems, field experiments were carried out at URF Koont in the years fall 2021 to fall 2022. Four cropping systems (i) Wheat-Guar-Wheat (ii) Wheat-Groundnut-Wheat (iii) Wheat-Mungbean-Wheat (iv) Wheat-Soybean-Wheat were grown by using four tillage systems such as minimum tillage, moldboard plough, tine cultivar, and chisel plough. Experiment was laid in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) replicated four times by keeping individual plot sizes 4 m x 4 m and row spacing kept at 25 cm. Data was recorded at maturity and harvesting stage such as yield components from field experiments. Collected data was used to calibrate Agricultural Production System Simulator (APSIM) crop model. After calibration, the crop model was evaluated using a data set of 2021- 23. Climate change impact assessment on all cropping systems was carried out by using the IPCC climate change scenario. Maximum yield components in both cropping system and tillage implements observed in chisel plough and minimum observed under the minimum tillage. Behind the cropping system maximum yield and yield attributes observed under the guar wheat cropping system.
