Abstract

This research work investigates the traditional usage of Acacia modesta Wall., its aerial plus underground parts in the treatment of neurological diseases i.e. anxiety and depression. The plant extracts were administered (100, 300, and 500 mg/kg) to albino mice per oral. The Forced swimming test (FST) was used to ensure anti-depression action. The line-crossing box was used to determine locomotor activity while head dip test (HDT) plus open field test (OFT) was performed for anxiolytic activity. The traction test was conducted to evaluate the muscle relaxant's effect. The extracts of stem, root, bark, and leaves of A. modesta were found to have anti-depressant and anxiolytic effects positively. The low doses produced a stimulant effect while calmness was observed at the high dose. The leaf and bark extracts showed effects on muscle tone's dose-dependently. The order of the anti-depressant effect of the extracts of A. modesta was bark > leaf > root > stem. The outcomes reveal that A. modesta, aerial and underground parts, possess anti-depressant and anxiolytic properties.
