STUDIES RESISTANT MECHANISM AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF SELECTED CANOLA GENOTYPES AGAINST MUSTARD APHID Lipaphis erysimi KALT. (HEMIPTERA: APHIDIDAE) THROUGH CONVENTIONAL TECHNIQUES

NOOR MUHAMMAD
Abstract

The study on categories of resistance in selected canola genotypes against mustard aphid (Lipaphis erysimi) was conducted in the glasshouse as well as under laboratory conditions in The University of Agriculture, Peshawar during growing seasons of 2020-2021. During this study, a total of two different experiments were carried out where the first experimental trial was conducted to find out the tolerance characteristics of the selected genotypes against L. erysimi based on proportional plant dry weight change (DWT) and tolerance indices (TI). During tolerance study of selected cultivars against mustard aphid, commercial cultivar ‘Zahoor’ proved reasonable tolerance characteristics based on more number of aphids attracted/sustained compared to the tested cultivars Abaseen, Omega and KS-75 and showed strong vigor against mustard aphid and no symptoms of attack/damages were observed. The second experiment was conducted on a commercial cultivar ‘Zahoor’ was labeled as tolerant during detailed categories of resistance and  the objective to determine the tolerant characteristics of selected canola genotypes for yield and yield components against mustard aphid (L .erysimi). The aphid density was recorded significantly greater on genotype Abaseen (250.10 aphid plant-1) and lower on genotype KS-75 (65.40 aphid plant-1).   The reaction of the tested genotypes was significantly different against L. erysimi as compared to susceptible cultivar (Abaseen). The actual yield of control plants was maximum (6.96 gm) in cultivar Zahoor as compared to Abaseen plants (4.67 gm). Similarly, among the artificially aphid infested plants, the cultivar Zahoor (5.48 gm) yielded significantly higher as compared to Abaseen (2.88 gm). The percent yield losses occurred due to aphid pressure recorded significantly higher in cultivar Abaseen (40.79%) and lower in commercial cultivar Zahoor (23.56%).
