CORN PRODUCTION BY PRE-PLANTİNG INSTEAD OF USING HERBICIDES

Leyla İDİKUT
Abstract

Sustainable weed management is one of the biggest challenges of both organic and conventional farming. Today, the most preferred method for weed control is chemical control, and as a result of continuous use of herbicides; It also reveals many problems such as durability, environmental pollution, residue. For this reason, the interest in organic agriculture and good agricultural practices, in which biological preparations are predominantly used, is constantly increasing. In order to ensure the sustainability of certified organic farming and conventional farming, other products are needed besides herbicides. Bioherbicides are among the suitable alternatives in reducing dependency on synthetic herbicides and protecting the agricultural environment. These products are a part of biological control in integrated weed control. This study was carried out in Kahramanmaraş ecological conditions for two years. Due to its allelopathic effect, radish was planted as a pre-plant, and after the field was plowed, corn plant was planted on it. The aim of this study is to provide weed control in corn plant without using herbicides by making use of the allopathic effect of the radish plant as a bioherbicides. Weed removal, which is part of the corn plant's maintenance work, was accomplished using four different applications: hand hoe, hand + tractor hoe, tractor hoe, and control. Except for the tassel emergence time and first node diameter, it was discovered that the radish as a previous plan had a significant positive effect on the investigated corn characteristics, such as ear silk emergence time, first ear height, plant height, ear length, ear diameter, number of rows per ear, number of grains per ear, grain ratio, and grain yield. Hand hoe and hand + tractor hoe weed removal applications were distinct from other applications and had a positive effect on maize yield component.
