Abstract

Background:- Berberine isolated from Rhizomacoptidis as  anti inflammatory drug has been supported by several research scholarly notices. The analysis of enzymes like aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase, alkaline phosphatase, salivary amylase, white blood cells and calcium levels in saliva has contributed to improve pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Hence we aimed to compare the antiinflammatory efficacy of berberine and chlorhexidine in patients with chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: The soxhlet extraction procedure was done and phytochemical analysis was performed. Mouthwash was prepared. Unstimulated  saliva was collected at three time intervals-base line, 1hr and 1week and the supernate of saliva was assessed through auto analyzer. Results:-Alanine amino transferase and white blood cells levels were decreased with berberine , where chlorhexidine was effective in decreasing the salivary APT levels . However both the mouthwashes were effective, in decreasing the salivary calcium levels. There was no difference noted between both the groups, with regards to remaining parameters. Conclusion:-  Our study was first of its kind comparing chlorhexidine and berberine mouthwash  invivo . Balanced results could be seen with both the mouthwashes. Futuristic clinical trials and spectrophotometric studies on each phytoconstituent of berberine needs to be explored for routine clinical use.
