SOIL SOLUTION- P AND PLANT-P CONCENTRATION IN WHEAT FIELDS FOR WHEAT PALNT YIELD AND HEALTHY TRAITS

Abstract

Besides soil type and plant growth stages, P-concentrations for optimum yield vary with plant-P extraction. Aim of the research was to correlate different P extraction methods with total soil-P concentration and plant-P concentrations for yield and yield traits of wheat. Samples were collected at anthesis and maturity stages of the crop from various fields and examined for physico-chemical properties and to analyze different methods of P-extract i.e. AB-DTPA, Olsen, water-soluble, paste, resin, and acid-soluble total-P. Plant samples were also evaluated for yield, yield traits along with concentrations and uptake of N, P, K and Zn. Soil was primarily silty loam, strongly calcareous, and alkaline, with no salinity issue. Soils were found deficient to marginal in AB-DTPA extractable P, K, and mineral N. Nevertheless, P-concentrations determined by various extraction methods at anthesis followed by Olsen P > Resin P > suspension P > AB-DTPA ext. P > Ethanol P > Paste P. Whereas, recoverable-P in each method varies based on volume of water and extracting salt, but found different among sampling with non-significance due to high variations. At anthesis, AB-DTPA extractable-P was significantly correlate with suspension-P, while other correlations were non-significant. Grain yield of wheat showed weak correlation with AB-DTPA-P, suspension-P, and total-P but a strongly correlation with plant-P. At harvest stage, the correlation values decreased, suggesting that anthesis stage is best stage of the crop for P-analysis. Grain yield showed significant correlation with plant height, spikes per meter, and grains per spike. Multivariate regression analysis revealed high correlation of grain yield with spike per meter, grains per spike, and 1000-grain weight. The study indicated that anthesis stage of wheat is the best stage to forecast soil and plant nutrient for final yield potential.
