Sadia Mushtaq
Abstract

In the present study Antibacterial and wound healing potentials of Marsilea quadriflolia L. were calculated. Antibacterial assay was performed by the disc diffusion method. A 500 uL bacterial suspension was spread gently over the agar plate with sterile cotton swab to maintain a uniform microbial load in each plate. Zone of inhibition was measured after incubation and mean data for each concentration. The antibacterial effect of the plant extracts (2 Conc. 5, 10ml each) against Bacillus Spp, Acinetobacter Spp, Klebsiella Spp, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas Spp were reported by agar disk diffusion methods. Escherichia coli was more sensitive to the extracts than other Bacterial species and the most effective extract was Marsilea quadrifolia. In wound healing activity Excision wound model were used to induce wound in Albino mice and treated with Simple ointment, Nitrofuranose and Crude extract ointment and wound area were measured after two days of 16 days activity, in M. quadrifolia 5% and 10% (w/w) extract ointment 288.80± 5.67, 288.21±5.14mm on first day and 1.60±1.28, 0.00±0.00 were on last day. Histological examination of each of the mice skin from all groups were done after wound healed. The study revealed that plant is very beneficial in medicinal industry and can be used to retard the growth of various bacterial strains and can be used in curing inflammation and wounds by the application of extract ointment.
