PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF THYMUS SERPYLLU

Abstract


Thymus serpyllum is a plant belonging to the family of Lamiaceae. It grows almost all over Eurasia (except the tropics), in North Africa, on the Canary Islands, and in North – West Greenland, but today it has become naturalized all over the world. T. serpyllum is used to treat various diseases, treat bronchitis and other inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract, with hematological diseases, inflammation, and contains antibacterial activity. In recent years, this plant has been the subject of intensive research to document its traditional use and to find new biological effects. These studies have revealed a wide range of pharmacological activity of T. serpyllum. This review highlights up-to-date information on pharmacological data that have been frequently reported on T. serpyllum. These data include anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and hypoglycemic effects. In addition, this article presents and discusses the chemical components responsible for the pharmacological effects of T. serpyllum, and clinical studies done T. serpyllum.
