Abstract
Preserving gene resources is important for sustainable agriculture. Turkey and Cyprus are countries that are the homeland of artichokes. In this study, The materials Cynara spp. collected were made in accordance with the UPOV criteria. Total phenolic substance analysis; Gallic acid standard was used to measure the total amount of phenolic substance in the analyses. Total flavonoid substance analysis; A catechin standard was used to measure the total amount of flavonoid substances in the analyzes. Total phenolic content was calculated as 4.97 mg GAE/g in Sakız variety, 6.41 mg GAE/g in early Cyprus variety and 5.22 mg GAE/g t in Hasanağa. Total flavonoid content was 1.05 mg CE/g in Sakız, 3.77 mg CE/g in early Cyprus, 1.45 mg CE/g in Hasanağa (Bayrampaşa) type, 2.70 mg CE/g in Cynara cornigera and 2.10 mg GAE/g in Cynara cardunculus. All local varieties and wilds showed 97.89% variation in morphological characters. The values obtained from the determination of total phenolic and flavonoid contents, the collected local varieties and wild ones, and the relationship between phenolic content and flavonoids were examined. With the results obtained, it were determined that the parents will be used in the breeding program. Thus, it is thought that an innovation can be brought to artichoke breeding studies by evaluating these features and their relations with each other in terms of artichoke breeding and using these materials in future breeding programs
