Abstract


The inhabitants of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan mainly rely on herbal medicinal plants for various health issues following pakhtun ethnic culture. The aims of this study were to document and review the plants used as ethno-medicine for the treatment of various kidney disorders in the selected district of KP, Northern Pakistan.  Field data was collected through semi-structure questioners and literature review was conducted by using online search engines. A total of 140 inhabitants were interviewed who were using 45 medicinal plants of 32 plant families for the treatment of various kidney diseases.  Asteraceae was found the most preferred family contributing 5 plants for the treatment of various kidney diseases. Herb was the most common life form (71%) followed by shrub (14%). Local peoples were mostly relying on whole plants (34%) taking it orally by making its remedies in the form of decoction (18%) and powder (10%). Literature study confirm that the medicinal plants like, Cichorium intybus L. (0.76) was the most leading cited species, followed by Citrus medica L. (0.69), Oxalis carniculata L. (o.5), Punica granatum L. (0.49) and Syzygium cuminii L. (0.47). of the research area have shown significant activates regarding the kidney disorders, which indicating the effectiveness of such plants as medicines. The authors suggest full and prompt response of the researchers to check these plants, which might possibly leads to the development of novel pure active compounds for the treatments of kidney diseases.
