Abstract

Abstract: Optimum sowing dates provide favorable temperature to obtain maximum yield. Varietal selection also plays vital role in obtaining high wheat production. The field experiments was carried at Agronomy Research Farm, The University of Agriculture Peshawar, Pakistan during winter season 2021-2022. Different wheat lines (MY902, MY1501, MY291-4, MY409-4) with local checks Wadan-17 and Khaista-17 were sown at four sowing dates (1st Oct, 15th Oct, 1st Nov and 15th Nov). The experiment was laid out under split plot design with three replications. Sowing dates were allocated to the main plots while wheat lines were placed in the sub plots. Wheat line MY1501 showed maximum days to emergence, jointing, booting, anthesis and physiological maturity. The maximum tillers, plant height and spikes length was recorded for wheat line MY291-4 while leaf area was higher in wheat line MY902. Yield and yield related parameters i.e. spikelets spike-1, grains spike-1, thousand grain weight and grain yield was recorded more for wheat line MY291-4 and biological yield was found maximum in line MY409-4 followed by local check Wadan-17. Among sowing dates, sowing on 1st November performed better with respect to tillers, leaf area, plant height, spike length, spikelets spike-1, grains spike-1, thousand grain weight, biological yield and grain yield while the harvest index was higher in early sowing on 1st of October. It is concluded from the results that early and late planting of wheat lines caused reduction in all the growth and yield attributes while optimum sowing date 1st November resulted in higher yield and yield components. Wheat line MY291-4 should be sown on 1st November for better results to obtain high yield and production in the agro climatic of Peshawar valley.
