Abstract

A field research was conducted to evaluate the effect of urea and farmyard manure (FYM) with nitrogen (N) inhibitors on greenhouse gases, N use efficiency and maize yield at The University of Agriculture Peshawar Research Farm in spring 2022. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) having seven treatments replicated three times including control (no urea) , urea (200 kg N ha-1), urea + FYM (50 % N from FYM + 50 % N from urea), urea + UI (Urease Inhibitor), urea + NI (Nitrification Inhibitor), urea + FYM + UI and urea + FYM + NI. Results revealed that application of urea + FYM with UI reduced total NH3 losses (51%) relative to the treatment with urea alone. Results also indicated that application of urea + FYM either with UI or NI also reduced N2O losses 40-50% respectively, compared with urea alone treatment. The results showed that the maize grain yield increased (19-33%) by urea + FYM either with UI or NI. The soil parameters were significantly increased. The soil EC maximum (0.263 dsm-1) at the dose of urea only at 200 kg Nha-1 and minimum recorded in control. The soil pH was significantly increased (7.92) at urea and NI while the minimum (7.56) were recorded at urea and UI. The result showed that soil total nitrogen were increased (0.25%) at urea only at 200 kg Nha-1 and decreased at FYM and urea. The soil extractable P was maximum (29.64 mg kg-1) at FYM, urea and NI while minimum (13.10 mg kg-1) were recorded in FYM and urea. Similarly soil extractable K were increased (119.53 mg kg-1) at FYM, urea and UI while decreased (89.67 mg kg-1) at urea and UI. Soil bulk density was significantly maximum (1.39 gcm-3) at urea and NI while minimum (1.18 gcm-3) at control. and total N uptake were increased (17-27%) by urea + FYM either with UI or NI respectively, compared with urea alone treatment. The N-use efficiency of urea + FYM either with UI or NI was significantly greater (30-58%) than that of urea applied at 200 kg N ha-1. Results further indicated that the application of urea + FYM relatively had a positive influence on soil properties. Overall, the results indicated that application of urea in combination with FYM and UI or NI has the potential to reduce NH3 and N2O losses, which are important to increase N use efficiency and crop productivity. More investigations are suggested under different agro-climatic condition to declare best application rate for the enhancement in the maize growth and yield.
