OPTIMIZING SULPHUR LEVELS FOR YIELD IMPROVEMENT IN WHEAT VARIETIES

Aamir Ihsan
Abstract

Sulphur is considered one of the secondary macro-nutrients, and its availability is needed for improved production of crop.  For better crop production, new wheat types require optimal fertilization. The current study was carried out to determine the effect of sulphur application on newly developed Wheat varieties, namely Wadan 2017, Khaista 2017, Akbar 2017, and Ghazi 2019. The S treatments were control, 10,15, and 20 kg ha-1. The experiment was carried out Agronomy Research Farm, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agriculture University Peshawar Pakistan, during Rabi 2021-22. Results of the data showed that among Wheat varieties, Ghazi 2019 had higher spike m-2 (269),  grains spike-1 (53), thousand grain weight (42.4 g), biological yield (7769 kg ha-1) and grain yield (3316 kg ha-1). At 15 kg ha-1 of sulphur had  maximum spikes m-2 (272) was recorded with 20 kg ha-1 of sulphur level. Plots having 15 kg ha-1 of sulphur application had improved grains spike-1 (52), thousand grain weight (41.8 g), biological yield (7398 kg ha-1), grain yield (3288 kg ha-1) and harvest index (44.5 %).
