Abstract

Liver is the largest glandular organ of the body that performs variety of physiological functions such as metabolism, bile secretion and vitamin storage. It also detoxifies various toxic substances and involves in synthesizing useful compounds. Various synthetic drugs are available in the market in treating liver complaints; however, these are also causing various health issues including liver damage. Medicinal plants are supposed to have safe, economical with less toxic effects compared to synthetic drugs. Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) locally known as kasni is traditionally used as herbal medicines for treating variety of liver diseases. The present proposal was aimed at evaluating hepato-protective activity of silver nano-based formulation of C. intybus by using rat model. The plant material was collected from the local market and extracted in ethanol and an aqueous solvent. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized from seed and root extracts by using silver nitrate. For evaluating the hepato-protective activity, in vivo activity of C. intybus mediated nanoparticles was conducted by using rats of the Wistar strain (Rattus norvegicus). Blood samples were taken after 24 hours of the last administration (i.e. 30th day). Seed and root nanoparticles were synthesized and their analysis was done by its characterization. The liver biochemical psrsmeters like ALT, ALP and total bilirubin are important markers to detect the changes in liver biochemical structure. There was significant increase the levels of ALT, ALP, bilirubin, cholesterol and triglycerides after administration of CCl4. The same were effectively reduced when treated with different concentrations of seed and root nanoparticles. Histopathology of liver further provided supportive evidence for biochemical analysis. This study established the hepato-protective potential of Cichorium intybus for the possible use in drug development programme against liver diseases.
