DYNAMICS OF LEAD TOLERANCE IN TOBACCO (NICOTIANA TABACUM L.) GENOTYPES
MUHAMMAD MAZHAR HUSSAIN
Abstract
Lead nitrate has been reported to significantly inhibit plant growth. The genotypic difference for lead nitrate stress in tobacco has been explored. In present study, eight tobacco genotypes were subjected to 200μM lead nitrate (Pb (NO3)2) stress in a hydroponic culture. Lead stress was given to plants for 14 days and data was taken at three times interval of stressed plants. Photosynthetic activity and antioxidant enzymes activity were assessed in a time series order i.e., 1 day, 7 day and 14 days. One day, seven day and fifteen-day old seedlings were subjected to 200μM lead nitrate stress along with control. Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) values for most of genotypes were found decreased while oxidant and anti-oxidant enzymes showed increased activity.
