Abstract

Response of chickpea to zinc and boron fertilization Shafiq Ahmad and Shazma Anwar Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Crop Production Sciences The University of Agriculture, Peshawar-Pakistan December, 2022 ABSTRACT A field experiment on response of chickpea to zinc & boron fertilization was carried out at Agronomy Research Farm The University of Agriculture Peshawar during Rabi season 2021. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) having three replications. Treatments were consisted of boron levels (0, 1, 2 & 3 kg ha-1) and zinc foliar sprays (0, 0.2, 0.4 & 0.6%). Plot size was 2.4 m × 3 m with row to row distance of 40 cm and plant to plant distance of 10 cm accommodating 6 rows. Karak-3 cultivar of chickpea was used in the experiment at the seed rate of 60 kg ha-1. Seeds were inoculated with Rhizobium leguminacere. Boron was applied to soil at sowing time while zinc was sprayed after 70 days of sowing. Results exhibited that application of boron at the rate of 3 kg ha-1 on chickpea significantly enhanced number of nodules plant-1 (24), days to first flowering (127 days), number of branches plant-1 (11), plant height (49.41 cm), thousand seeds weight (235 g), biological yield (4390 kg ha-1), seed yield (1566 kg ha-1). Zinc foliar spray at the rate of 0.6 % significantly improved number of nodules plant-1 (23), days to first flowering (124 days), number of branches plant-1 (11), plant height (48.04 cm), thousand seeds weight (237 g), biological yield (4380 kg ha-1), seed yield (1452 kg ha-1). Interactive effect of boron and zinc was found non-significant for all parameters under study except number of branches plant-1, seed yield and harvest index. It is concluded that boron application at the rate of 3 kg ha-1 and 0.6% zinc foliar spray retained higher seed yield of chickpea and thus recommended for Peshawar region.
