Abstract

ABSTRACT              An experiment on evaluation and characterization of exotic chickpea lines was carried out at Agronomy Research Farm, The University of Agriculture Peshawar, Pakistan, during Rabi season 2021-2022. The experiment included 10 chickpea lines (Ulzet, Aksin-91, Goktork, Sari-98, Unzunlu-99, Ardogan, Bahadir, Gokce, Azkan and Inci) with two local check (Fakhri thal and KK-1) in RCB design with three replications. The plot size was 6 m2 having 4 rows 3 m long with row to row and plant to plant distance of 50 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Results indicated that the local check KK-1 took less days to emergence (10), flower initiation (81), 50% flowering (88), 50% physiological maturity and had maximum emergence (18 m-2) and more number of seeds pod-1 (1.83). While exotic chickpea line Ulzet produced higher seedling length (11.2 cm), number of leaflets (16), number of pods plant-1 (57), pod beak length (6.08 mm), seed length (1.13 cm), seed width (0.83 cm), 1000 seed weight (405 g), biological yield (4127 kg ha-1) and grain yield (1639 kg ha-1) as compared to the local checks. Likewise, Unzunlu-99 line resulted in higher rachis length (8.5 cm), leaflet length (1.6 cm), leaflet width (1.03 cm), plant height (94 cm), number of primary branches plant-1 (4), number of secondary branches plant-1 (8), number of tertiary branches plant-1 (4), pod length (2.84 cm) and pod width (1.5 cm) as compared to the local checks. Exotic line Aksin-91 line recorded higher harvest index (53%). It is concluded that exotic lines Ulzet and Bahadir performed better than the local checks in terms of yield and yield components.
