Expolitation of Genetic Resistance in Availabile Wheat Germplasm for Yellow Rust Disease

Jameel Ahmad Bhatti
Abstract

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), an essential cereal crop, is a cheap source of protein and calories in developing countries. Its production plays a sustaining role in the food security of the world. Yellow or stripe (irregular patterns) is symptoms of causal agent Puccinia striiformis Westend f. sp. tritici (Pst)) produced by wheat on it leaves and adversely affects wheat crop production in main central cultivated areas of the world. Past to present, rapid genetically diverse change has happened in Pst races. Recently, it has begun to replace increasingly earlier clonally propagated and slowly enhance their chances for the creation of endemic populations. However, parallely comes rapid advances in genomics application for wheat germplasm against the slowly evolving genetically divergent Pst races such as genetic resistance approaches, cloning of yellow rust resistance gene, designing of yellow rust resistant genes and searching of new resource for genetic exploitation with the help of conventional breeding. So, this review focuses on key genetic resistance approaches utilization which are responsible for maximum wheat crop production and reduce losses due to this vulnerable disease. It is imperative to bring out modern genetic approaches for diverse Pst races which appear after every second year and enhance of wheat crop production in future perspective by utilization these techniques.
