Abstract

Abstract Northern Corn Leaf Blight (NCLB) is globally economic important maize foliar fungal disease caused by fungus Exserohilum turcicum. The current study highlights the importance of resistance in genotypes to minimize yield loss due to NCLB. Six parents along their nine hybrids were evaluated during summer 2020. Two experiment were conducted in order to make the comparison of genotypes in artificially inoculated and in fungicide (control) sprayed trial. Disease severity was recorded using 0-5 disease rating scale. The genotypes Karamat-Bar, SZP-13200 and NCEV-1530-11were identified as high resistant (HR) with disease severity of 8 HR, 5 HR and 2 HR while Ghuari, Kissan, and Soan-3 were identified as high susceptible (HS) with severity of 80 HS, 95 HS and 85 HS respectively. The disease incidence ranged from 3-45% under disease control condition (fungicide application) while 12-87% in inoculated trial. The area under diseased progressive curve (AUDPC) ranged 34-465dus (Percentage development stage unit) in inoculated while 12-367dsu in control trial. The highly resistant genotype Karamat-Bar had least AUDPC of 12dsu. Among hybrids, moderately resistant hybrid Karamat-Bar × Kissan had AUDPC of 45dsu. Yield loss in number of kernel rows per ear varied from 3-8%, it was 2-9% in thousand grain weight and 3-64% for grain yield. Percent increase was 81% in grain yield per plant and inhibition percentage of overall genotypes was 72% while percent disease index of all genotypes get reduced to 53% in fungicide trial. Yield and disease traits were significantly negative correlated. The current study concludes that planting resistant varieties could be effective in yield loss reduction.
