Effect of Foliar Application of Zinc on Physico-Chemical Attributes and Fruit Yield of Grapes (Vitis vinifera L.)

Kashif Ali
Abstract

Zinc (Zn) has important functions in plant growth and development. These functions include regulation of almost all important biochemical reactions by controlling their respective enzymes. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to investigate the role of zinc to improve yield parameters and physico-chemical characteristics of grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) cv. ‘Flame seedless’ during 2019-2020. Grape vines were tested against five levels (200, 250, 300, 350 and 400 ppm) of zinc as zinc sulphate and compared with control as water spray. The selected growth parameters were achieved in five separate steps i.e. before and after shoots, at flowering, as well as after 10 or 20 days of fruit setting.  The foliar application of zinc significantly influenced yield parameters i.e. average berry weight (mg) berry diameter (mm) and cluster compactness and all physico-chemical attributes of grapes selected cultivar. However, the foliar application of zinc @ 400 ppm significantly increased fruit yield, total soluble solids, total sugar, reducing sugar, ascorbic acid of fruit, leave chlorophyll a, b,  iron, zinc and boron contents.
