Shumail Fatima1
Abstract

Introduction: Viola odorata (Violaceae) is a medicinal plant commonly known as sweet violet or banafsha. Viola contains violanthin, glycosides, stigmasterol, violin, salicylic acid, benzofuranone, β- sitosterol, methyl salicylate, violacin. Viola has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-dyslipidemic, anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-diabetic, sedative, anti-hypertensive, and anti-fungal properties. Material and methods: The anti-inflammatory property was assessed in vitro by HRBCs membrane stabilization method and anti-arthritic activity was assessed by Protein denaturation method. The activity of V. odorata was compared with standard drug, Diclofenac sodium. Results: Results discovered that the ethanolic extract of V. odorata at different conc. possess significant anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory activity comparable to the std drug. In protein denaturation method, the % inhibition of 125, 250, and 500 µg/ml of Violais 80.82, 93.08 and 94.34, respectively. In membrane stabilization method, the % inhibition of 125, 250, and 500 µg/ml of V. odorata is 78.58, 80.45, and 90.12, respectively. Phytochemical analysis showed the existence of carbohydrates, lipids, tannins, phenols, flavonoids, steroids/terpenes, alkaloids, glycosides, coumarins, and quinones. Conclusion: From the current outcomes, it can be concluded that Viola odorata possess highest anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory effects. The effects were possibly due to flavonoids, Alkaloids, terpenoids content of Viola. As a result, it could be beneficial for future work as an active anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory medication.
