Documentation, Ethnomedicinal and Phytochemical Study of Orchids - A Review

Abstract


The Orchidaceae family is the largest group of flowering plants in the Angiosperm monocotyledons spread on our planet. Its member called orchids are herbs or epiphytes with showy flowers, distributed mainly in tropical regions. Orchids flowers are one of the most fascinating and gorgeous of all nature’s. flower’s and exhibit a wide range of diversity in form, size, color and texture that make them unique among the ornamental plants. They are generally cultivated for beautiful flowers and  widely known for their economic importance and very less for their medicinal use but  some  Orchid sps.as a following Acampe - 4, Aerides - 2, Anthogonium - 1, Anoectochilus - 2, Arundina - 1, Argostophyllum - 2, Brachycortis – 1, Bulbophyllum - 5, Cephalanthera - 1, Calanthe - 5, Coelogyne - 10, Conchidium – 1, Corymborkis - 1, Cremastra - 1, Cymbidium - 7, Dactylorhiza - 1, Dendrobium - 19, Dienia - 1, Epipactis - 2, Eulophia - 11, Galeola - 1, Geodorum - 1, Goodyera - 2, Gymnadenia - 1, Habenaria - 10, Herminium - 1, Liparis - 2, Luisia - 3, Listera - 1, Malaxis - 4, Monomeria - 1, Mycaranthes - 1, Nervilia. - 2, Oberonia - 2, Otochilus - 2, Papilionanthe - 1, Peristylus - 1, Phaius - 1, Pholidota - 1, Vanda - 2, Rhynchostylis - 1, Satyrium - 1 species are used as medicine for treatment of various ailments. Several classes of phytoconstituents have been so far isolated from therapeutically used. Orchids showing a great chemical diversity. Phytochemical constituent. Phytochemical analysis of 38 genera of orchid.  And 46 genera and 122 species are use ethnomedicine in India.
