EVALUATION OF SOCIOECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF BARRAGES BY ANALYTICAL HIERARCHY PROCESS (AHP) METHOD

Usama Ijaz Butt
Abstract

Barrage is a structure built over a river to channel water to important canals. Barrages are used to create carbon-free energy, control flooding, and recharge groundwater. It is usually difficult to measure which kind of consequences contribute the most to making the barrage economically viable and environmentally friendly. The study used multi-discipline criteria called as the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) approach evaluate the significance of environmental and socio-economic impacts of three barrages in Punjab, Pakistan. The main focus of this research is to develop a model that will help to predict which Sub-Parameters are more important before the construction of barrages. A decision tree was built and the impacts, Parameters, sub-Parameters, and Scenarios (barrage) were positioned at a different level of the tree and weighed with Saaty’s scale. The Socio-economic ranked first and ‘Environmental Impacts’ were positioned second. The priority of Scenarios was calculated on the basis of the global weights of Sub-Parameters. As a result, the Jinnah barrage was considered more suitable in its impact on the community and the environment, due to its advantage in ‘Major Irrigation Project’, ‘Small Hydropower Plant’, etc. This study will prove very effective in the future construction of hydraulic structures on any river.
