COMBINED EFFECT OF ANTIMONY (Sb) AND ARSENIC (As) CO-CONTAMINATION ON THE PHYSIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF Boehmeria nivea L.

HUSSANI MUBARAK
Abstract

Antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) are biochemical analogs and simultaneously occur in the sulfide ores. Boehmeria nivea L. is reported as metal tolerant, inhabitant in the sulfide (Sb) mining areas in China. The novelty of this research is the role of B. nivea in the mitigation of Sb+As co-contamination is unexplored. Therefore, a hydroponic study in the greenhouse culture experiment was conducted to evaluate the interactive effects of Sb and As on the growth, photosynthesis and the antioxidant enzyme system in B. nivea. The highest Sb and As accumulations in the root, were recorded as 3221+1.35 and 1679+0.37 mg Kg-1, respectively. The tolerance of B. nivea were evident by the inhibited height at highest added Sb+As, the change in chlorophyll content, increase in peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activity and the decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) activity. Thus, B. nivea constitute simultaneous accumulation of high concentrations of Sb and As, and can be adopted for the remediation. Keywords: Boehmeria nivea; Antimony (Sb); Arsenic (As); Phytoremediation; SPAD-chlorophyll; Antioxidant enzymes.
