IMPACT OF PLANT BASED LIQUID ORGANIC FERTILIZER ON ABELMOSCHUS ESCULENTUS (L.) MOENCH UNDER SALINE STRESS

Muhammad Aleem
Abstract

: Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench (Okra) is one of the most nutritious, medicinally and economically important crop. Worldwide crops including Okra have been facing biotic and abiotic stresses especially salinity adversely effects Okra yields. This research was aimed to transform the fruit and vegetable waste into useful liquid organic fertilizer and to access its effect on morphological, physiological and biochemical responses under saline stress in Okra. In this context, a completely randomized experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of two levels of salinity and plant based liquid organic fertilizer (P-LOF) application in Okra plants. Fertilizer application had a significant positive effect on morphology i.e. leaf area (cm2), leaf biomass (g), stem biomass (g) and leaf relative water content (LRWC). In addition, chlorophyll a and b contents were decreased, whereas carotenoids were increased. P-LOF had only a slight or negligible effect on POD and SOD. In nut shell, this study indicated that the P-LOF can improve the growth of A. esculentus and perform a vital role for the improvement of Okra production in saline areas. Furthermore, it would be fascinating if this study carried over for several years to analyze the long-term effects of fertilizers in combination.
