AN ETHNOBOTANICAL ASSESSMENT OF MEDICINAL PLANTS USED BY LOCAL PEOPLE OF QUETTA CITY

Abstract
This study manifests the medicinal values of indigenous plants used by local people of Quetta City. For this reason, an Ethnobotanical survey was carried out in study area to report the importance of medicinal plants and their uses by local people for the cure of different diseases. Twenty plants belonging to different species were observed having medicinal properties and are used by native people for cure of different diseases such as skin, mouth, stomach and etc. Maximum plants were reported from family Solanaceae. Some of the species were used as pot herbs like solanum nigrumand chenopodium album. Acacia nilotica, is used as mouth wash in cancer and syphilitic infections. It is useful against vaginitis, leucorrhoea and piles. It is also effective against diabetes mellitus and diarrhea. Gum is useful nutritive agent and used as aphrodisiac in sexual disabilities. Some documented species of Acacia and Astragalus is used as fuel and for domestic purposes. Cichorium intybus is effective against fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Mentha leaves are used as mouth refreshment. Other species are used as tonic. Rosa damascena is used as Gulukand and rose water is used as stomach and intestinal problems. Peganum harmala when burnt, smoke is used as insect repellent. It is also helpful in relief of joints pain. Seeds are used as antiseptic agent.
