Abstract

By the year 2030, ending all forms of hunger and promoting the well-being of people are the two (SDG2&SDG3) out of 17 sustainable development goals set by the UN assembly. Agriculture scientists are trying to achieve these two goals by utilization of new biotechnological tools for bio fortification and bio pharming of plants. Biofortification is an approach to augment the quantity and nutritional quality of crops like Rice, Wheat, Potatoes, and fruits, etc., using modern techniques that include ZFN, TALENs, CRISPR/cas9, Cis-genesis, and Intra-genesis. Food enriched with micronutrients (iron, vitamins (A, C, E), zinc etc) has been produced to reduce the morbidity and mortality rate of children and women in developing countries like Africa, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan, etc. Moreover, Genetic modification of food has increased its production that is enough to cope with the burgeoning population. This aspect of GM technology is enabling us to achieve the above-mentioned goals (SDG2 & SDG3) timely.
