Dr V Manimozhi Selvi
Abstract

The experiment material consisting of 105 germplasm accessions and five check varieties were assessed for 12 quantitative characters and 11 qualitative characters during kharif, 2014 at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. Little millet is classified into two races; race nana and race robusta based on the shape and compactness of the inflorescence. The aim of the study was take on to explosion the diversity for different morpho- agronomic characters in little millet collections. Open panicle type was observed in race nana whereas, compact panicle was observed in robusta. From this study, majority of the accessions belongs to race nana (60%) followed by robusta (40%). Accessions of race nana were characterized by medium duration, short plant stature, narrow leaves, bold seeds and high single plant yield while accessions of robusta showed tall plants, late flowering type, small grains, wide leaves and low single plant yield. Partition of correlation effects in the entire collection into nana and robusta implied that still more yield contributing traits in robusta are to be studied. Further the PCA confirms more number of traits are to be studied in race robusta to understand the variability present in the sub species. Keywords : Little millet, Phenotypic diversity, Genetic Variability, Correlation, Principal component analysis,
