Screening of maize accessions for drought tolerance through principal component analysis

Amna Javaid
Abstract

Drought is among the severe abiotic stresses which results in reduced crop yield. Maize being the widely distributed crop suffer from drought stress which results losses in final kernel yield. Screening experiment was conducted to select drought sensitive and drought tolerant maize accessions under water stress applied via calculating field capacity. In this experiment two treatments To and T1 (T0 with 100% field capacity and T1 with 50% field capacity were used. This experiment was conducted using factorial complete randomized design, with two replications at weire house, Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Data of seedling traits were recorded. Drought tolerant and drought sensitive accessions were selected by using principal component analysis. The accessions H45C × H6 B, H21 × H2B, H17 × H16, H23 × H21, H17 × H16A were drought tolerant, while the accessions H20 × H7C, H47A × H6C and H9 × H21 were drought sensitive. This research will provide useful information in future for the comparison of drought sensitive and drought tolerant accessions and will help to identify drought tolerant maize accessions that can be used in future breeding programs.
