PH RESPONSIVE PSYLLIUM-HYALURONIC ACID AND COLLAGEN BASED HYDROGEL FOR ORAL INSULIN DELIVERY

Usman Ahmad
Abstract

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic and genetic disorder which gets worse with time and ultimately leads to various complications like renal failure, heart diseases and blindness. Protein based hydrogels for quite recent times involved in insulin delivery via oral cavity are under the spotlight. Novel hydrogels were formed in this study by using biomaterials (Psyllium, Hyaluronic acid and Collagen). They can be used for the oral delivery of insulin as subcutaneous administration of insulin is painful, complicated and can also results in allergic reactions. To understand working and capability of formed hydrogel as drug cargo, physical characterization was done using FTIR analysis; swelling ratio and drugs kinetics of hydrogels. Swelling kinetics shows that hydrogels followed less Fickian diffusion. These points favour the delivery of insulin in the intestine while escaping the acidic medium of stomach. Zone of inhibition around the hydrogels illustrated its antimicrobial activity. Finally, its administration to mice indicates the delivery of insulin by the decrease in glucose level measured by glucometer. Keeping in view the results of different analysis it can be concluded that these biomaterial based hydrogel can prove to be very suitable in oral delivery of insulin in diabetic patients
