DIVERSITY ASSESSMENT FOR ASIATIC AND EUROPEAN CARROTS WITH THE AID OF PHENOTYPIC, BIOCHEMICAL AND MOLECULAR MARKERS

HARSIMARDEEP KAUR DHALIWAL
Abstract

Forty-five carrot accessions belonging to diverse collection based upon their regions were analysed for identifying unique genetic loci. Fifty-five SSR molecular markers were accessed for identifying the polymorphic markers with respect to the different carrot accessions. Out of these markers, 49% (25 markers) exhibited polymorphism with remaining of 51% (26 markers) monomorphic markers. Twenty-five polymorphic markers amplified a total of 85 alleles at 2921 loci with an average of 1.67 alleles per locus. Eleven SSR primers exhibiting unique alleles were identified in 18 carrot genotypes which can be efficiently used for hybridity confirmation. Cluster analysis using SSRs based on neighbour joining method categorized all the 45 accessions into six clusters which were independent of the geographical sites from where they were collected. The genetic similarity coefficients ranged from 0.36 to 0.86 signifying a fair degree of dissimilarity among the carrot genotypes evaluated. Hence the current study aims at the genetic diversification of carrot accessions for identifying the unique alleles with the aid of molecular markers. Diversification analysis using morphological, biochemical, and molecular analysis revealed carrot genotypes that can help in breeding programs for various favourable traits like nutritional value, production, processing value.
