Correlation analysis of sugar quality attributes with yield components of sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) under heat stress

Faisal Mehdi
Abstract

Pakistan is one of the major sugarcanes producing country, however, yield and quality of sugarcane severely hampered during last two decades owing to unfavorable environmental condition like high temperature stress. So, it is imperative to understand the affect of high temperature stress on sugar recovery rate and develop climate resilient sugarcane. Therefore, two different (high and low sucrose accumulating) sugarcane (S2003-US-633 and SPF-238) cultivars were subjected to high temperature (45±2°C) stress at maturity stage. Plant yield and sugar quality attributes were also determined to explore their influences on sugar recovery rate under stress condition. The response of plant yield and quality attributes revealed significant variation in total sugar content, °brix, pol, and recovery rate of heat treated and control plants. Correlation analysis manifested significant positive correlation among total sugar, nonreducing sugar, pol, °brix with recovery rate while significant negative correlation observed with reducing sugar, shoot length, fresh to dry weight ratio. As compared to leaf length, leaf width played positive role to mitigate thermal effect. The data of plant leaf canopy along with non-reducing sugar, pol and brix may help to select thermotolerant sugarcane crop.
