COMPARISON OF GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY FOR THE SELECTION OF BEST FORAGE PEA (PISUM SATIVUM L.) VARIETY CULTIVATED IN SEMI-ARID REGION OF TURKEY

Nizamettin Turan
Abstract

Forage legumes such as pea constitute nutritionally superior feed for dairy animals but lower herbage yield drives for screening higher biomass producing cultivars having comparable nutritional value. This research was planned to determine the performance of some forage pea genotypes in Semi-Arid East Anatolian Highlands of Turkey during the winter seasons from the year 2018 to 2020. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. The genotypes exhibited significant divergences in terms of herbage productivity and nutritional quality traits. The maximum dry matter yield of 4.3 t ha-1 was recorded from the Line-1, indicating its superior genetic potential and better adaptability to local pedo-climatic conditions. Considering the nutrition quality parameters, the maximum values for crude protein ratio and crude protein yield were recorded from Ates and Ozkaynak cultivars. Findings of this multi-year study revealed that Ozkaynak and Ates varieties and Line-1 population were found superior in terms of herbage yield and quality under semi-arid agro-climatic conditions.
