Response of various grain sorghum varieties to nitrogen fertilization under agro-ecological conditions of Dera Ismail Khan

Abstract

Due to severe shortage of grain and fodder for animals and water shortage for maize crop, there is a great need to introduce various cultivars of a crop like sorghum. An experiment was designed to evaluate the effect of different cultivars and nitrogen levels on growth and yield of sorghum. The experimental trial was designed in randomized complete block having arranged in split plots and were replicated three times. The main plot contained six cultivars (Desi Sorghum, PARI-S4, PARI-S5, Sorghum-86, BR-39 and HSF) whereas sub plot comprised of three nitrogen doses (50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1). All yield contributing attributes were significantly affected by using different varieties and nitrogen doses. The maximum CGR (11.69 g m 2 day-1), grain panical-1 (2340 kg ha-1), 1000-grain weight (27.66 g) and grain yield (4297 kg ha-1) was documented in PARI-S4 supplied with 150 kg ha-1. These findings further explained that the variety PARI-S4 superseeded to all other varieties and nitrogen levels proved to be the optimum dose under prevailing condition of the Dera Ismail Khan.
