BIOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF SUNFLOWER UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF MEDICINALLY IMPORTANT CROP; LEMON GRASS

M. Asad
Abstract

In the natural environment, there are different medicinal plants growing that have pronounced ethnobotanical importance hence strong probability of containing therapeutic compounds. The current proposed study is designed to examine the effects of foliar spray of lemon grass (CymbopogoncitratusL.) leaf extract on biochemical parameters of sunflower (Helianthus annuusL.). The physiological parameters, carbohydrates, proteins and chlorophyll contents were extracted and evaluated from roots, stems and leaves. In this regard, different concentrations of lemon grass foliar spray were applied to sunflower plants and 1% concentration showed to be the best application for physiological promotion. Among roots, shoots and leaves, leaves showed highest adaptive capability by synthesizing greater amount of total chlorophyll i.e., 0.043±0.03 mg/g, carbohydrates i.e., 2.99±0.003 mg/g and proteins i.e., 2.11±0.05 mg/g in plants treated with 1%.The study produced comprehensive outcomes hence supports the utilization of natural bio-stimulants for crop growth. However, The technique of foliar spray of aqueous extract of lemon grass is a low cost and effective method to improve cultivation of sunflower. It will be helpful in agribusiness for the enhancement of essential oil production. Higher concentration of lemon grass aqueous extract could be helpful for weed control in agriculture. Although lemon grass can be utilized in folk medicine but it can be used with caution for medicinal purpose, it may cause serious problems and cell damage by excessive usage.
