Ethnobotanical and Biodiversity Survey of Medicinal Plants used as Medicines to Manage Diseases of Humans

Abstract


Abstract Ethnobotanical relevance Numerous Medicinal plants have been used even today to treat and prevent diseases. Several studies carried out in various regions in Morocco show the great use of the aromatic and medicinal plants (MAPs) for many centuries to treat many diseases. Herbal markets contribute significantly to the availability of medicinal plants and to the transmission of cultural heritage. This study was surveyed among the local population in the province of Moulay Yaakoub. The aim of the present investigation is to document ethnobotanical knowledge and to identify different medicinal and aromatic plant utilized in traditional herbal medicine by this targeted community. Materials and methods Information was obtained through open-ended interviews with local people using semi-structured questionnaires in the form of ethnobotanical surveys to select the various medicinal and aromatic plants that characterize the target area. Ethnobotanical indices (e.g., relative frequency of citations, use value, relative importance, and informant consensus factor) were used to quantify the use and cultural importance of medicinal and aromatic plants in the province of Moulay Yaakoub. The data were analyzed using use value (UV), relative frequency citation (RFC), fidelity level (FL) and informant consensus factor (ICF) and by the descriptive statistics method. Results The analysis of the results identified 97 species of vascular plants belonging to 43 botanical families are used by the population of the province of Moulay yaakoub. The families most represented in the target area are Lamiaceae (17.53%), Apiaceae (8.25%), Asteraceae (7.22%), Brassicaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Zingiberaceae have the same percentage (4.12%). Conclusions This ethnobotanical study carried out in the Moulay Yaakoub province allows to select several medicinal and aromatic plants used in the traditional phytotherapy by the local population
