Traditional Usage of Medicinal Plants by Inhabitants of District Bhakkar, Punjab, Pakistan

Abstract


Medicinal plants have great importance due to high vegetation and its utilization by locals on the basis of traditional knowledge for the cure of numerous diseases. District Bhakkar is blessed with many resources in which medicinal plants are one of them, is situated in the west of Punjab, Pakistan. Scientific researches aren’t made on this particular area to evaluate their importance and uses medicinally. This research work will elaborate ethno-botanical uses of existing medicinal plants of this region. For this purpose, interviews of informants belonging to different professions and ages were taken by semi-structured questionnaire in local languages. Most of them were in between 60 to 75 years old, including herbalist (Hakeems), midwives (Daai) and ethno-veterinarian. In this ethno-botanical survey, all collected findings are analyzed with published work of different researchers and final results are detail mentioned in a table. The herbarium of dried medicinal plants used in this research work is submitted in Department of Biological Sciences, University of Sargodha, Sub Campus Bhakkar, Bhakkar. This is the first documented data regarding ethno-botanical uses of medicinal plants of district Bhakkar. This effort will enable future researchers of this region for their research work to study the ethno-pharmacology and phytochemistry of these plants for the betterment of human health.
