INTROSPECTION OF DISCRIMINATE FUNCTION ANALYSIS FOR SELECTION TO IMPROVE YIELD IN RICE (Oryza sativa L.)

Palaniyappan S
Abstract

In order to improve the grain yield the different selection indices were constructed based on discriminate function using 36 rice genotypes. Two types namely equal (Selection Index I) and unequal weightages (Selection Index II) were used to construct selection index using 17 quantitative traits resulted 94.34 % and 95.88 % genetic advance respectively. In this the genotypes M7-1, M7-4, M7-6, M7-8, and M7-11 proved their top rankings based on index score in both the cases. Based on primary yield contributing traits with different combinations of discriminate functions revealed that increased genetic advance and relative efficiency with increased traits over the direct selection for single traits. In this regarding a total of 33 indexes were worked out with 7 yield component traits viz., SPAD value (X1), Flag leaf length (X2), Productive tillers (X3), Number of grains per panicle (X4), Filled grains (X5), Hundred seed weight (X6) and Grain yield per plant (X7). The index I14567 and I1457 recorded highest genetic advance 126.58 and 126.24 respectively revealed the traits X4, X5, and X7 had contributing high genetic advance for yield improvement.
