Improving nitrogen use efficiency of wheat through the foliar spray of nitrogen and its effect on the nutritional quality of wheat (TRITICUM AESTIVIUM L.).

Abstract


Nutrient deficiency is a global problem, limiting crop production and serious effect on the nutritional quality of cereal crops. Optimizing nitrogen (N) application rates can improve nutrient uptake and nutrient use efficiencies in wheat. Field experiments were conducted to find out the effect of nitrogen foliar application on the growth, yield, and nutritional quality of wheat. The experiment was treated with a foliar concentration of nitrogen with treatments of 0.5 and 1.0% foliar at the growth stage of booting. The results revealed that plant height (cm), tillers (m-2), spike length (cm), grains spike-1, grain yield (kg ha-1), grain protein(%), and starch content (%) showed a significant response to foliar application of nitrogen. The results revealed that wheat crop was sprayed with 1.0% of nitrogen observed maximum plant height (70.60cm), Tillers (322.3 m-2), spike length (9.42 cm), grains spike -1 (55.60), grain yield (5062.5 kg ha-1), grain protein content (13.4%) and grain starch (73.3%). However, the wheat crop was sprayed with 0.5% of nitrogen had ranked 2nd in plant height (67.51cm), Tillers (255.6 m¬2), spike length (7.50 cm), grains spike -1 (43.08), grain yield, (4193.1 kg ha-1), grain protein (11.4%), grain starch (73.03%). Moreover, the lowest value had observed in the control treatment of wheat. It is concluded that wheat was sprayed with 1.0% of nitrogen performed better and enhanced wheat productivity as compared to soil application. Further results suggested that the foliar application at appropriate timings of growth can help to achieve maximum crop yield and also maximize nutritional quality.
