QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF MEDICINAL PLANTS OF KOH VALLEY CHITRAL HINDUKUSH RANGE PAKISTAN

Abstract


Abstract This is the first ethno-medicinal investigation with the aim to document the traditional medicinal usage of plant resources with the therapeutic values in Koh Valley Chitral, KPK, Pakistan. The research survey explored the dependence of local people on medicinal plants in their routine life and provides practical evidence regarding the local uses of medicinal plants in health care practices. A total of 160 informants including resident of the study area with gender representation and traditional healers were interviewed by using visual appraisal approach and rapid rural appraisal methods along semi-structured interview and open ended questionnaires. The data was quantitatively analyzed by following quantitative indices like frequency citation, relative frequency citation, use report, family importance value, part used and their utilization. The ethnomedicinal usage of 128 medicinal plants belonging to104 genera and 51 families were reported. The data indicated that the dominant family was Asteraceae (14 species). Herbs (82 species) were the most abundant life form and fruits (42 totals) were the frequently used plant parts reported. Berberis lycium was found as highly cited plant species by respondents. The highest plants used for ailments were gastro-intestinal tract (52 species) category. Relative frequency citation ranges from 0.05 to 0.29 and family Asteraceae shows highest value. Papaver somniferum (16) shows highest use report (UR). The majority of plant species were found to have strong pharmacological properties. The present study will provide the basis for the preservation of ethnomedicinal heritage, knowledge and practices as well as for the further scientific investigation regarding the development of new herbal drugs.
