CHROMOSOME COUNTS OF SOME BRASSICACEAE TAXA IN EGYPT AND ITS TAXONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE

EHAB ABDEL-RAZIK KAMEL
Abstract

On a population basis, cytological studies were conducted on 12 Brassicaceae taxa from various geographical locations in Egypt. Variable chromosome reports from (2n=20) is observed in four taxa; Brassica rapa L., Brassica tournefortii Gouan, Enarthrocarpus strangulatus Boiss, and Matthiola longipetala (Vent.) DC. subsp. livida (Del.) Maire. (2n=22) in two taxa; Diplotaxis acris (Forssk.) Boiss. and Eruca sativa Mill. (2n=26) in two taxa; Diplotaxis harra (Forssk.) Boiss. and Eremobium aegyptiacum var. aegyptiacum (Spreng) Asch. (2n=24) in two taxa; Farsetia aegyptia Turra and Lepidium sativum L. In Lobularia arabica (Boiss.) Muschl. and Sisymbrium irio L., the numbers are 2n=36 and 14, respectively. For the first time, 2n=20 of Matthiola longipetala (Vent.) DC. subsp. livida (Del.) Maire taxa have been determined. In the current study, chromosomal features were useful for classifying Brassicaceae tribes, genera, and species.
