Abstract

Abstract Nitrogen (N) is the most important element required for the crops growth and development. It is imperative to calibrate optimum N level and varieties for enhanced crop production. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of various levels of N on wheat varieties Pirsabak-05, Wadan-17 and Shahkar-13 at Agriculture Research Station (ARS) Baffa, Mansehra, during 2020-2021. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with two factors using seed rate at the rate of 120 kg ha-1. Different N levels (0, 105, 120, 135 and 150 kg ha-1) were applied in the form of urea in two splits, half with sowing and remaining half twenty days after plant germination. The basal dose of P and K at the rate of 90 and 60 kg ha-1 as single super phosphate and sulphate of potassium, respectively were applied at sowing time. Results showed that maximum plant height of 104.9 cm, spike no. m-2 (264.9), total dry matter yield (9485.5 kg ha-1), grain yield (3060.8 kg ha-1), thousand grains weight (50 g), straw yield (6437 kg ha-1) were recorded with 150 kg N ha-1 followed by wheat yield produced by the application of 135 kg N ha-1. Post harvest soil organic matter and N contents improved significantly (P ≤ 0.05) with increasing N levels. Wheat grain and straw N concentration of 1.82 % and 0.66 %, respectively were maximum in treatment of 150 kg N ha-1. Maximum plant N uptake of 98.74 kg ha-1 was recorded maximum with same N level in Wadan-17 variety. The wheat variety Wadan-17 was followed by Pirsabak-05 in production of yield and yield components. Results suggest that yield and plant N uptake by wheat improved significantly (P ≤ 0.05) by increasing N levels in all wheat varieties. Wadan-17 proved better than other varieties under the prevailing conditions of experiment.
