PHYTOCHEMICAL, ANATOMICAL, ANTIOXIDANT AND MOLECULAR SCREENING OF SELECTED MEMBERS OF FAMILY EUPHORBIACEAE: A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH

Hannan Mukhtar
Abstract

The present study aimed to conduct a detailed study on four members i.e. Euphorbia milli Des Moul., Bischofia javanica Blume., Aleurites molucanna L. and Putranjiva roxburghii Wall. of Euphorbiaceae by multidisciplinary approaches viz., taxonomic and phytochemical investigations and molecular analysis. The taxonomic study revealed that stomata present in all members were paracytic while leaves were amphistomatic. Trichomes were mostly multicellular but absent in P. roxburghii. Extracts of plants leaves were prepared in different solvents i.e. chloroform, acetone and methanol to perform phytochemical tests that revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, saponnins, phenols and flavonoids but saponnins were absent in E. milli. Antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH (2, 2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity. A. molucanna had highest antioxidant activity i.e. 90 % in methanolic extract while lowest antioxidant activity was observed in P. roxburghii i.e. 50 % in chloroform extract. Molecular analysis was done by using five ISSR primers namely UBC-834, UBC-857, UBC-828, UBC-816 and UBC-841. All the primers have shown polymorphism. It was inferred that these plants are an effective source of antioxidants which could play vital function in protecting the living cells from free radicals.
