Abstract

ABSTRACT A study on “performance of lemon basil in aquaponics and conventional growing systems” was conducted at ornamental nursery, Department of Horticulture, The University of Agriculture Peshawar, during the year 2021. The experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with spilt plot arrangement having two factors replicated four times. The performance of lemon basil in aquaponics and conventional growing systems at different sowing dates was observed. The seeds of lemon basil were sown on different dates i.e., 18th April, 25th April, 2nd May, 9th May, 16th May and 23rd May, 2021. The results showed that growth and production of lemon basil was significantly influenced by growing systems as well as the sowing dates. The comparison of the growing systems showed that all the growth and yield parameters provided better performance in the conventional growing system over the aquaponics system. Concerning the sowing dates, the plant sown on 18th April gave the best performance by producing maximum plant height (64.75 cm), number of branches plant-1 (8.4), number of leaves plant-1 (425.6), leaf fresh weight (76.49 g), leaf dry weight (16.59 g), stem thickness (0.98 cm), leaf area (4396.9 cm2), chlorophyll content (31.45 SPAD), number of inflorescences (41.0), length of inflorescence (14.13 cm), number of seeds plant-1 (5504.0) and seed yield (487.89 kg ha-1).
