Biological and pharmacological properties of myrtenol: a review

Hanae Naceiri Mrabti
Abstract

Myrtenol (C10H16O) is a volatile compound belonging to the terpenoid family especially monocyclic monoterpenes. It is presented in the essential oils of several aromatic plants, especially Myrtus, Tenacetum, Artemisia, Hyssopus and Rhodiola genera and is can be produced from the oxidation of α-pinene. Several biological investigations have demonstrated the pharmacological properties of the myrtenol including antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic, anxiolytic and gastroprotective activities. In this review, we have discussed in depth the work that has studied the biological properties of this molecule. The cellular and molecular mechanisms are also presented and discussed. In light of these findings, further preclinical and clinical studies are strongly recommended to validate the beneficial effects of the Myrtenol molecule. Toxicological tests and pharmacokinetic studies are also required to validate the safety and efficacy of this molecule.
