Abstract

ABSTRACT Urban wastewater (UWW) and industrial wastewater (IWW) release lots of heavy metals in environment leading to various risk regarding agricultural production, food quality, human and animal health and environmental safety. Phytoremediation is known as one of the best and affordable strategies to eliminate or reduce heavy metals in different environment. This study examined the phytoremediation ability of three plants species including (Cyperus alternifolius, Vetivera zizanioides and Aloe vera) to absorb heavy metals of Zn, pb, Cu, Cr, Mn and Ni from the contaminated soil with UWW and IWW for 14 months. According to the results of this study, the heavy metal pollution can be significantly reduced through phytostabilization of the examined plants. The highest TF (translocation factor) was belonged to Mn in A. vera under UWW treatment. The highest BCF (bioconcentration factor) was belonged Cu in V. zizanioides under IWW. Also V. zizanioides had the highest BAC (biological accumulation coefficient) value for Zn. Tolerance Index (TI) of the examined plants under UWW treatment was found to be in the order of (V. zizanioides > C. alternifolius > A. vera) and under IWW treatment was in the order of (V. zizanioides ≥ A. vera > C. alternifolius).
