Allelochemical, phytochemical and biological effects of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms

Asadullah
Abstract

The allelopathic studies showed that the aqueous extract of leaves (WL) and rhizomes (WR) has a great effect on the germination, fresh and dry weights of Setaria italica, Lactuca sativa and Lemna minor at different concentration. WR of Eichhornia crassipes had no deleterious effect on the magnification of Pistia stratiotes. WL at 5 g shows 80% mortality and at 10 g showed 100% mortality. The methanolic extract of rhizome (MR) and of leaf (ML) showed antimicrobial activities against sundry pathogens, namely, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsella pneumoni, Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans and Cladosporium carrionaii. The phytotoxic activity was withal paramount at a concentration of 10 μg/ml, proficient at 100 μg/ml, while moderate at 1000 μg/ml of MR and ML. ML exhibited consequential cytotoxic activity against the concentration of 10 and 100 μg/ml and is moderate at 1000 μg/ml. The plant is highly cytotoxic as LD50 of the MR extract was 93.73 and that of ML was 74.31.
