Comparison of different varieties of Citrus paradisi as source of bioactive compounds with antioxidant potential

Amina Mumtaz
Abstract

The Citrus family, especially grapefruit, has attained considerable attention due to the presence of a number of essential components that have cardiovascular and anti-hypertensive properties. This study aims to determine the antioxidant properties of peel and juice extract of three grapefruit varieties i.e Duncan, foster and pink. Different in vitro assays were applied to different fractions of the peel and juice of Grapefruit: 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), APX (Ascorbate-peroxidase) activity and CAT (Catalase) activity. When peel and juice extract of these varieties were compared maximum increase in APX activity was observed in Duncan juice and peel extract showed minimum APX activity, while maximum CAT activity was observed in foster peel and lowest was observed in peel of pink variety of grapefruit. Free radical scavenging increases with the increase in concentration of extraction mixture. Maximum free radical scavenging was observed in peel fraction of foster grapefruit i.e. (84.79%) and in case of juice maximum free radical scavenging activity was observed in pink grapefruit variety. Grapefruit juice can be considered to be a good dietary source of nutrients and antioxidant compounds. Over all it was found that the peels of all grapefruit varieties are major source of the different antioxidants. And these by-products of the juice extraction industry could become a source of natural antioxidants.
